Laser Tattoo Removal

Our clinic uses Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser technology for the targeted treatment of unwanted tattoos. This device is commonly used in clinical settings for the gradual reduction of pigment in tattoos of various types, including those created professionally, recreationally, or following trauma.

Laser tattoo removal typically involves multiple sessions, spaced several weeks apart. The number of sessions required may depend on factors such as the size, age, colour, location, and type of ink used in the tattoo. Results may vary between individuals, and complete removal is not guaranteed.

A consultation with one of our qualified practitioners is recommended to assess suitability and provide individualised information regarding the procedure, possible risks, and expected outcomes.

More Information On Tattoo Removal Treatments

Decorative tattoos have been practiced for thousands of years, with some evidence dating back over 5,000 years. The desire to remove tattoos has a similarly long history. Earlier methods of tattoo removal, such as dermabrasion, saltabrasion, and the use of Argon or CO₂ lasers, often carried a high risk of scarring and inconsistent results.

More recent developments in laser technology, such as the introduction of Q-Switched Nd:YAG lasers, have provided a more targeted and refined approach for the treatment of unwanted tattoo pigment. These devices are commonly used in clinical practice to reduce the visibility of tattoos over a series of sessions, with individual results varying based on multiple factors including tattoo type, ink colour, and skin type.

Q-switched lasers, such as the RevLite device, emit specific wavelengths of light that are absorbed by tattoo pigment in the skin. When the laser energy is absorbed, it may cause the pigment to break into smaller particles. These particles are then gradually processed by the body over time.

Treatment outcomes can vary depending on the ink type, tattoo colour, skin tone, and other individual factors. A consultation is required to assess your suitability and develop a personalised treatment plan.

The RevLite laser can lighten professional, amateur (homemade), traumatic and surgical tattoos.

On average, professional tattoos require 8-14 treatments, while amateur tattoos require 4-5 treatments, all spaced approximately 6-8 weeks apart. The number of treatments depends on the amount and type of ink used, as well as the depth of the ink in the skin.

Dark (blue and black) and red inks will resolve the best. Oranges and purples usually fade as well. Green and yellow inks are the most difficult to remove, with additional treatments needed to produce significant fading.

Tattoo fading following laser treatment varies significantly from person to person. Factors such as the type and colour of ink, the depth of application, skin type, and the age of the tattoo can all influence the degree of fading over time.

There are many different tattoo inks in use globally, and their composition is often unknown. As a result, the extent of fading or the number of sessions required cannot be guaranteed or precisely predicted. Your practitioner will discuss expected outcomes and limitations during a personalised consultation.

Laser tattoo reduction involves the delivery of light in short pulses to target tattoo pigment. Some individuals describe the sensation as similar to the snap of a rubber band on the skin. Comfort levels can vary depending on individual sensitivity, the tattoo’s location, and the intensity of the treatment.

Topical numbing creams may be used if required, depending on individual needs and clinical assessment. Your practitioner will discuss options to help ensure your comfort during the procedure.

An antibacterial ointment and a dressing will be applied to the area immediately after treatment. Occasionally, there will be pinpoint bleeding associated with the treatment.

Follow the post-procedure instructions provided to you. The treated area should be kept clean. A shower can be taken the next day, although care should be taken not to scrub the treated area. If a scab forms, it is vital that you do not pick it or scratch it.

This will be discussed at the initial consultation at our Adelaide clinic. Treatment costs will vary depending on the size, colour and time required to treat the tattoo.

The government provides no Medicare rebate for laser tattoo removal and GST of 10% is applicable. The cost of the treatment is determined by the practitioner at your consultation appointment.
