Age Spots, Liver Spots, Freckles, Brown Spots & Pigmented Lesions
What are pigmented skin lesions?
Common pigmented skin lesions include freckles, liver spots (also called age spots or solar lentigo) and pigmented nevi (flat moles). They normally contain very high concentrations of melanin (brown pigment) and can be caused by chronic sun exposure, ageing, genetics or injury.
How does the treatment work?
Our Q-Switched Nd:YAG RevLite laser targets melanin, the principle visible component in pigmented lesions. Melanin is destroyed while surrounding tissue remains undamaged. Brown spots darken initially and then form a dry scab, which drops off one to two weeks later. The spot may remain dark for up to four weeks before disappearing. Scarring is rare, but occasionally the final result is a spot slightly paler than the surrounding skin treatment stings but is usually tolerable. This method causes no damage to surrounding tissue. Sunscreen use is essential to minimise recurrence of sunspots.

A laser is a machine that emits a high intensity, narrow beam of light, usually of one or two pure colours (wavelength). There are many types of laser. Medical lasers have diverse applications and different lasers have different features that make each one suitable for its specific purposes.
Certain colours of light absorb into some skin components but not others. The laser therefore heats and destroys the targeted blemish but not the surrounding skin. If the appropriate wave length and the correct energy for a specific blemish are chosen, the unwanted cells can be damaged but the normal skin cells left intact. This results in rapid healing and minimal risk of scarring. We do not laser beyond acceptable limits of tissue damage to prevent the risk of permanent scarring. Therefore re-treatment may be necessary.
The laser penetrates skin to a maximum depth of about six mm, so cannot affect deeper tissues or internal organs. The exception is the eye, which can be readily injured. Special eye shields or goggles are always used when the laser is in operation. The laser does not produce any rays known to be harmful in the long term, such as X-rays, gamma rays, U.V. light etc.
The sensation of laser is akin to very quick, hot pinpricks. Most skin conditions can be easily treated without any anaesthesia. Anaesthetic cream is available to make treatment more comfortable if desired. This cream is applied generously to the area to be treated 30 mins prior to treatment.

What are bulky lesions?
Bulky lesions include skin tags, seborrhoeic keratosis (age warts), benign moles, warts and sebaceous hyperplasia (small white sebum filled lumps).How does the treatment work?
Skin tags, age warts and sebaceous hyperplasia can be removed completely and scar-free by laser. We use a combination of two laser wavelengths on our copper bromide laser to remove these lesions from the surface of the skin. A small scab develops following laser removal. This scab falls off to leave new normal skin where the lesion once was. Moles are not completely removed by laser. Instead, they are flattened and their pigment removed. This usually required several treatments. Moles are only treated if they confirmed to be benign.The sensation of laser is akin to very quick, hot pinpricks. Melasma

What is melasma?
Melasma is a very common but treatable skin condition. The darkened skin discolouration normally appears on sun-exposed areas of the face. It can be triggered by hormones, sun exposure and is more common in people with darker skin types. Typically, melasma occurs over the cheeks, forehead, nose or upper lip. Melasma causes no other medical problems other than skin discolouration. However, it can be of great cosmetic concern.
How does the treatment work?
Melasma is caused by an over production of melanin by melanocytes in the skin. Our Dual Yellow copper bromide laser transmits light deeply into the skin to reduce VEGF (the driving factor behind melasma) without causing collateral damage. By using the yellow light, we reduce melasma while avoiding pain and damage to surrounding skin structures.
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients require four to six treatments with a two week interval between treatments. Maintenance treatments will required in the future.
