Skin Cancer Checks

Skin Checks Now Available

Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world. With our warm climate and a love of the outdoors, we expose our skin to the harmful UV rays time and time again. It is reported that 11,500 Australian men and women are diagnosed with a melanoma each year, and an estimated 434,000 people are treated for one or more non-melanoma skin cancers. Skin cancer accounts for over 80% of all new cases of cancer diagnosed in Australia each year.

This increases the importance of an annual skin check, as early detection can save lives.

It’s important to get to know your skin and what is normal for you, so that you notice any changes. Develop a regular habit of checking your skin for new spots and changes to existing freckles or moles.

Skin cancers rarely hurt and are much more frequently seen than felt. The sooner a skin cancer is identified and treated, the better your chance of avoiding surgery or, in the case of a serious melanoma or other skin cancer, potential disfigurement and even death.

Your skin check is carried out by our in-house Doctors. You may have one spot that you would like to have checked or a number. Please let our front desk staff know and they will book the appropriate amount of time for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

No referral is necessary.

We’ll be looking for changes to your skin and anything that doesn’t look right, so we’ll have to study your skin quite closely. We do that with a dermatascope, which we hold up to your skin and can take photos with. All you have to do is lie there and relax.

If a lesion of concern is discovered, the examining Doctor will discuss possible options with you. The doctor may recommend a treatment or biopsy of the lesion to determine a diagnosis.

Each doctor and clinic is different but most checks will take 15-30 minutes. Wear loose clothing and no make-up. You may be asked to strip to your underwear. Don’t forget to mention to the doctor if there are any spots in hidden places. You can get skin cancer in areas that are not directly exposed to the sun.

Although skin cancer is rare in kids, it can occur. Although we do not recommend full body checks for kids, if there are spots that are growing out of proportion or more irregularly than they should, these should be checked by a doctor.

If you have a mole which is:

  • Changing
  • Growing
  • Irregular
  • Itchy
  • Bleeding
  • New

Then you need this to be assessed as soon as possible. Please book in at your earliest convenience for a screening appointment.

Payment Information

Gap fees are payable for consultations. Additional gap fees apply if further procedures, such as skin biopsies, skin cancer surgery and patch testing, are done. The fees of our Doctors vary.

Private medical insurance does not cover the gap fees that are payable for consultations and the surgery performed at our clinics. Private medical insurance only benefits you if you require private hospital admissions, or undergo surgery at day surgery institutions or in private hospitals.

Patients who do not hold a Medicare card do not receive a Medicare rebate and therefore are required to pay the full private fee for consultations, investigations and procedures. We request payment for consultations at the reception desk after you have been seen by the doctor. Payment for excision of benign tumours or skin cancers is made when you return for removal of sutures.
