Lasers, Light Therapy and Skin Peels – Procedures Explained

Are you considering a new skin treatment, but not sure how the different treatments available compare? Here we will detail three of our skin rejuvenation treatments to help you determine which one is best for you.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation explained

What is it?

Laser skin rejuvenation is a type of skin care procedure performed by a dermatologist or physician. It involves using lasers to improve skin texture and appearance through skin tightening, reducing pore size, skin lightening, reducing pigment and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Who will benefit from this treatment?

Laser rejuvenation can be considered if you have the following skin care concerns that aren’t treatable with over-the-counter (OTC) products.

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Mild to moderate acne scars
  • Crow’s feet
  • Sagging skin
  • Warts
  • Uneven skin tone

Laser Skin Rejuvenation treatment procedure:

Before laser skin rejuvenation treatment, the skin may need to be prepared with prior smaller treatments. The laser can be used to rejuvenate many body areas including the face, hands, neck and chest. On the day of the procedure, anaesthesia is usually not necessary, but you may request a topical cream depending on your own experience. The skin is firstly cleansed to remove any excess oil, dirt, and bacteria. Then, your physician slowly moves the selected laser around the area of skin being treated. Following, the treatment area is wrapped to protect the skin post-treatment.

After non-ablative laser rejuvenation, recovery time is minimal. You may have some redness, swelling and discomfort, however, you can resume your normal activities and skin care routine immediately.

LED Light Therapy explained

What is it?

Light emitting diode (LED) light therapy is a painless, relaxing, non-invasive skin care treatment with no downtime. The deep penetrating and soothing LED lights are used for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving uneven skin tone, targeting active acne and illuminating the skin. At Laser Skin & Vein Clinic in Adelaide, we offer four types of LED light treatments:

  • Blue light: which sterilises the skin to treat acne
  • Yellow light: which treats problems of blood circulation
  • Red light: which promotes cell reproduction
  • Infrared: which reduces skin inflammation

Who will benefit from this treatment?

The primary benefits of LED Light therapy treatment is stimulating collagen production, for increasing collagen production and treating mild to moderate acne. This can smooth out the skin and reduce the appearance of damage from:

  • Age spots, by promoting anti-ageing effects
  • Acne, by treatment
  • Wrinkles, and
  • Skin inflammation

If you have these skincare concerns, or haven’t seen the results you want from over-the-counter (OTC) skin products, then LED light therapy could be recommended for you. LED therapy is also safe for all skin colors, and it doesn’t cause any burning.

LED Light Therapy treatment procedure:

At the beginning of your light therapy treatment, your skincare professional will cleanse your face and remove any makeup. This will help to open the pores and allow the treatment to better soak into the skin. The LED light box is then activated, and protective eyewear is worn to avoid direct exposure from your eyes to the LED light.

LED treatment takes about half an hour, and has zero downtime and no pain. It can be used stand-alone or in conjunction with other treatments.

Glycolic & Chemical Peels explained

What is it?

Chemical skin peels involve deep exfoliation of the skin and application of a chemical agent, which causes the exfoliated skin to peel off. By removing this outer layer, brighter and healthier skin is revealed beneath. This also improves the tone and texture of the skin by smoothing out the signs of ageing and sun exposure. Skin peel treatments can be applied to your hands, neck and face.

Who will benefit from this treatment?

If your skin is suffering from any of the below conditions, a chemical peel treatment will benefit you.

  • Acne Scars
  • Age Spots
  • Freckles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Scars
  • Crow’s feet
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Sagging skin
  • Wrinkles
  • Other superficial pigment discolouration

Chemical skin peels are suitable for most skin types and ages, and can be one of the most effective treatments for a broad range of skin concerns.

Glycolic & Chemical Peel treatment procedure:

During the peel treatment, your skin professional will use a cotton-tipped applicator, gauze or sponge to apply a chemical solution to your skin. This solution may contain glycolic acid, salicylic acid, mandelic acid and/or lactic acid, depending on the chosen peel treatment. The treated skin will then begin to whiten or turn grey. It is possible to feel stinging, burning or itching sensations while the chemical solution is on your skin, but will stop once the treatment is completed. Depending on the level of treatment, a neutraliser, wash or cool compression is applied to soothe the skin. After the peel, post-treatment recommendations will be provided for looking after your skin and prolonging the results of your treatment.

At Laser Skin & Vein Clinic, your skin practitioner will recommend the most appropriate peel and home care regimen after conducting a professional diagnosis and analysing your skin type.
